How slot-style games are built: reels, symbols and themes

Slot-style games have been around for more than a century, first as mechanical machines with spinning drums and today as colourful digital games. The games on Lucky Play Social are free social versions created by a professional game studio. Here is a quick tour of how they are put together.

Reels and rows

The grid you see is made of reels — vertical columns that spin — and rows. A classic layout has three reels and three rows; many modern games use five reels or unusual shapes. When you press the spin button, each reel stops on a random position chosen by software.

Symbols

Every game has its own set of symbols. Some are classic and instantly recognisable: cherries, lemons, plums, golden bells, stars and the lucky number seven. Others are drawn from the theme — a wolf howling at the moon, a flaming bell or a glowing temple. Special symbols often trigger an animation or a short feature round that makes the game more lively.

Lines and combinations

Lines (often called paylines) are the paths across the reels where matching symbols count as a combination. A game with twenty lines, such as Sevens & Fruits, checks twenty different paths after each spin. In our free social versions, combinations simply change the on-screen score and play an animation — nothing more.

Random results

Modern games use a random number generator: software that picks an unpredictable outcome for every spin. Each spin is independent of the previous one, so there are no "hot" or "due" moments and no strategy that changes the result. That is useful to remember in any kind of game.

Themes, art and sound

A big part of a game studio's work is art direction. Designers choose a theme — classic fruits, ancient legends, wild animals — and build everything around it: the symbol artwork, the background, the music, the sound effects and the celebration animations. Titles such as "Hold and Win" are part of the game's theme and branding; on this website they describe a feature of the free game, not a promise of anything.

Try it yourself

The easiest way to see these ideas in action is to open one of our games and watch how the reels, symbols and animations work together. Start with Flaming Bells for a classic layout or Wolf Power for a more cinematic theme — and remember that it is all free and for entertainment only.
